Busway and Busbars | Legrand United Kingdom

Is Starline a viable product for non-hyperscale data centers?

The simple answer is that Starline is suitable for all types of data centers, not just hyperscale. However, you have to evaluate feasibility on a case-by-case basis.

For example, in enterprise data centers, busways provide flexibility for frequent reconfigurations. If a company runs site testing or R&D in their racks, they might need to change loads frequently, and busways allow them to do that easily without rewiring. In contrast, colocation data centers might use busways to ensure seamless tenant transitions, where client A leaves and client B moves in without having to rip out the infrastructure.

Busways are all about control. And in today’s data center market, control is everything. Whether it’s a hyperscale, colocation, or enterprise data center, having control over power distribution, visibility into power usage, and flexibility for future expansions are all critical.

So, while hyperscale facilities may be the largest adopters of busways, they are just as valuable for smaller and mid-sized data centers.

One misconception we sometimes see is that people assume busways are only for large-scale deployments. But that’s not true. With data centers evolving into various shapes and sizes, the key factor is power distribution—not physical footprint. Whether a facility is large or small, busways provide the same advantages in terms of flexibility, efficiency, and scalability.
