Busway and Busbars | Legrand United Kingdom

What is a busway system, and why is it essential for data centers today?

The busway distribution system is essentially a method of transporting power from point A to point B. Fundamentally, it consists of the same core components you'd expect in power distribution: a conductor, an insulator for protection, and a housing for structural integrity. The key difference between a busway system and many other traditional power distribution systems is the open track design on the underside of the busway. This feature allows users to plug in live tap-off units, which supply power to downstream IT racks.

This has become increasingly critical as the industry has evolved. The primary benefits include scalability—from initial deployment to phases two, three, four, and beyond—as well as a high degree of flexibility in system design. Additionally, the ability to quickly adapt to power demands means busways are a critical component in modern data center power distribution.
