CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is the world’s largest particle physics laboratory, dedicated to uncovering the fundamental structure of the universe. Its mission focuses on conducting world-class research, providing state-of-the-art facilities, fostering collaboration among scientists globally, and training the next generation of scientists. Achieving this mission requires not only exceptional scientific talent but also cutting-edge technology and a robust, resilient infrastructure capable of supporting data-intensive scientific workflows and managing vast data processing demands.
Challenge
CERN’s advanced particle physics experiments generate enormous volumes of data, requiring high-density computing power and precise, reliable cooling. Maintaining stable operating conditions is critical, as even small thermal fluctuations can compromise performance, reliability, or system uptime. To safeguard mission-critical computing and enable continuous scientific analysis, CERN needed a cooling solution that could deliver efficiency, precision, and sustainability at scale.
Solution: Legrand's ColdLogik Rear Door Cooling Technology
Usystems: Rear Door Heat Exchangers (RDHx)
To address these challenges, CERN selected the USystems ColdLogik Rear Door Heat Exchanger (RDHx) solution from Legrand’s specialist data center portfolio.
Mounted directly on to the rear of server racks, the ColdLogik RDHx absorbs heat from the hot air expelled by servers, cools it using an efficient heat exchanger, and recirculates the cooled coolant. This closed-loop system effectively manages and dissipates heat, maintaining optimal operating temperatures, and reducing energy consumption by up to 93%.
Once deployed, ColdLogik RDHx systems operate with minimal ongoing maintenance, allowing CERN’s IT teams to focus on research and data processing rather than cooling management. By optimizing energy use and cooling performance, ColdLogik’s RDHx also supports CERN’s broader sustainability and environmental stewardship goals.
Results and Impact
The collaboration between USystems and CERN demonstrates how innovative cooling design can empower the most advanced scientific research. With ColdLogik RDHx, CERN achieves:
High-efficiency thermal management for continuous, data-intensive workloads
Reduced energy demand, supporting sustainability commitments
Consistent system uptime, ensuring uninterrupted access to mission-critical computing
Together, USystems and CERN are pushing the boundaries of technology and science, showing that sustainable, resilient infrastructure can support discoveries that shape our understanding of the universe. While CERN drives scientific exploration and expands the frontiers of knowledge, USystems is honored to serve as a trusted partner, providing the critical infrastructure that supports its groundbreaking work.
