The purpose of the blanking cassette is to reserve the slot for future cassette usage on copper or optical flat patch panels.

The presence of blanking cassettes allows for a quick visual localization of unused cassette slots, as well as prevents penetration of dust in the patch panel. The presence of the blanking cassette prevents hot air from behind the cabinet to mix with cooler air from the front, thus maximizing the air cooling system in place in the data center.
