How are cable openings, power whips, and overhead trays handled?

Cable routing depends on the containment design. In horizontal containment designs, the containment roof is typically supported by and sits atop the cabinets, allowing cable trays, power whips, and other services to pass over the roof and down into the racks.

In vertical containment, most used in hot-aisle containment, structural aisle “towers” may support arms or frameworks that carry cable trays, power distribution, and cooling infrastructure overhead. Where cable openings or pass-throughs are required, these openings are sealed using brush strips or foam inserts, allowing cables and power whips to pass through while keeping the containment as airtight as possible. This preserves separation between hot and cold air streams, maintaining cooling performance, and overall efficiency.
