GLOBAL DEMAND FOR ENERGY IS RISING STEEPLY AND experts FORECAST THAT GLOBAL ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION WILL double WITHIN 30 YEARS. THE "SMART GRID" Concept which originated in the us HAS THUS BECOME A TOPIC OF WORLDWIDE CONCERN.

THE Smart Grid concept

Smart Grids can be defined as the new generation of electrical power networks. Both intelligent and communicating, they combine power distribution and a communicating data infrastructure. Providing precise, real-time network control and supervision, they allow for better balance of power supply and demand. We currently face a potentially severe imbalance between exponentially growing demand on the one hand and a limited supply on the other. The purpose of Smart Grids is to enable energy demand variations to be foreseen and controlled, while avoiding consumption peaks and facilitating increased production when it's needed.
Thanks to user involvement, Smart Grids will facilitate the operation of commercial premises and consumption control in residential buildings.

LeGRAND solutions

As the global leader in electrical and digital building infrastructures, Legrand supplies user-friendly solutions designed to inform users of their consumption, enable them to control their installation, and thereby contribute to lowering overall energy demand and consumption in residential and commercial buildings. Smart Grid product offerings are thus mainly designed to meet the overall challenge of energy consumption control, while also contributing specifically to enhanced management of the phenomena of daily or seasonal peaks. They need to inform building occupants about the status of their power consumption and/or production, and facilitate action to adjust behaviour patterns accordingly.

MEASURING

››› Metering and measurement

The first action to take in any building is the effective diagnosis of the current  situation, to identify consumption factors for each use application and individually evaluate them. This is also necessary for decentralised energy production schemes involving, for example, solar or wind power generation. To meet this purpose, Legrand proposes a range of energy meters and measuring units.

VISUALISING + analysING

››› Consumption display

Users of buildings, whether residential or commercial, can become more ethical consumers by being made aware of their energy consumption and/or production patterns. The relevant data can also be shared with the energy providers. This function is currently available through Legrand supervision software, on platforms incorporated into wiring devices and via a downloadable application for mobile devices.

CONTROLLING

››› Load shedding

During consumption peaks, suppliers request consumers to cut back on their non-essential applications.  Legrand's dedicated offering, including a load shedding controller and software, is designed to help the user determine such non-priority circuits. This can be done both manually and automatically, locally and remotely. Legrand systems for residential (My Home) or commercial premises (Building Manager) enable building users to become active players in the operation of Smart Grids by defining simple energy management scenarios.
