New economies such as China, India, Russia, Mexico and Turkey offer high growth potential with fast-growing GDP, booming demographics, an expanding middle class and rising investment, too. Growth in all these areas creates strong demand for innovative infrastructure in housing and for other buildings.

Over the past ten years, we have more than doubled our exposure to these markets of tomorrow, which generated 35% of our consolidated sales in 2011.

Arteor is a premium range of wiring devices for hotels and residential buildings that is packed with innovation. Launched in late 2010, it took the Chinese market by storm through its sheer variety of applications, design and materials, but also by its distinctly international profile.

A comprehensive range of products that optimizes the performance of electrical enclosures at every stage, Puissance 3 was successfully launched in Brazil in 2011.

In addition to innovation, Legrand enters new economies through a strategy of targeted, self-financed acquisitions of small and mid-size companies with leading positions in fast-growing markets. One example is our 2011 joint venture with Megapower, market leader for plastic cable management systems in Malaysia. We acquired Brazilian UPS leader SMS the same year and, more recently, Numeric UPS, the Indian market leader in low- and medium-power UPS. Businesses in new economies have accounted for nearly 50% of total acquisitions since 2004.

Acquisition of Numeric UPS

In early 2012 we strengthened our positions in new economies and the fast-growing UPS market by acquiring Numeric UPS, India's market leader for low- and medium-power UPS. The company brought Legrand a portfolio of quality products, strong brand awareness, and an extensive sales and service network of over 1,500 employees covering the entire nation and rounding out our reach in India.

Acquisition of SMS

In 2011 we acquired SMS, the market leader for UPS in Brazil, rounding out the robust positions already held in Brazil, where Legrand took first place for wiring devices, door-entry systems, miniature circuit breakers and industrial enclosures. The acquisition also marked a new step forward in the development of energy-performance business.
