Legrand

High environmental performance products

For the Legrand Group, designing and developing high environmental performance products means working on 7 levers, from managing the substances used, through to eco-design.

Lever 1

No substances covered by the
RoHS directive

Lever 2

Traceability of substances

Lever 3

60% or more recyclability

Lever 4

Manufacture on an ISO 14001 certified site

Lever 5

Development

team that
has an
Environmental
Management
System

Lever 6

Production of Product Environmental Profiles (PEP)

Lever 7

Eco-design

Lever 1

No substances covered by the RoHS directive

Since 2004, the Legrand Group has anticipated the elimination of all the substances covered by the RoHS directive (2002/95/EC), including those in equipment not covered by the directive. The Group has set itself a target of extending the application of the European directive to cover all its products sold worldwide.

LEVER 2

Traceability of substances

Substances are traced in line with standard IEC 62474. The traceability of substances, and in particular the REACH regulation in Europe is, for example, a specific project for Legrand. The Group incorporates this so that it is in a position to inform customers, worldwide.

Recyclability

Lever 3

60% or more recyclability

The recycling potential of a product is the percentage of material that can be recycled using existing techniques (IEC WG4 draft standard).

Enclosures LCS2
For ease of manufacture and to increase its recyclability, the VDI enclosure has been designed with 20% less material and different parts from the previous range. Its recycling potential is therefore now 99%.

Lever 4

Manufacture on an ISO 14001 certified site

The manufacture of products is an important stage for environmental performance. The environment is taken into account via ISO 14001 certification, leading to the reduction of energy consumption, reduction of waste, risk management and the awareness of staff.

Lever 5

Development carried out by an R&D team using an Environmental Management System.

The environment is incorporated naturally at each stage in the development process used by the R&D teams. The pursuit of improvement is a source of innovation and creativity.

Lever 6

Production of Product Environmental Profiles (PEP)

Legrand is committed to providing transparent, accurate information on the environmental impact of its products. Product Environmental Profiles (PEP),  complying with standard ISO 14025, describe the environmental characteristics of each product throughout its life cycle.

These eco-declarations are produced as part of the "pep ecopassport" initiative which ensures document compliance with the ISO 14025 standard.

Lever 7

Eco-design in relation to the standard *

Eco-design means providing customers with products that have the minimum environmental impact throughout their life cycle (in accordance with the methodology described in standard ISO 14040), based on indicators calculated using internationally recognised scientific methods.

* The concept of standard refers to the previous generation of the product or to the targeted product from the competition, or even the generic product for the profession (standard established by a trade association, a standard such as NF "Environnement BAES").

For example, at Legrand, the new generation of eco-designed LCS2 RJ45 outlets has enabled significant improvements:
- greenhouse gas emissions reduced by 10%
- hazardous waste generation cut by 20%
- resource depletion indicator down 10%
